The Need 

In February 2022, GLS was engaged by Novelis, the leading producer of flat-rolled aluminum products and the world’s largest recycler of aluminum, to identify a location for the first fully integrated aluminum rolling mill in the United States in over 40 years. The project required a site with significant acreage, rail, and interstate accessibility, access to a highly skilled workforce, and large quantities of fully-renewable energy. Additionally, speed-to-market was critical.

The Solution 

In May 2022, following an intensive site location search spanning ten states and evaluating nearly 100 properties, Novelis announced its intention to locate the first of its kind integrated rolling mill in Bay Minette, Baldwin County, Alabama. The project will total an investment of $2.5 billion over three years and create approximately 1,000 high-paying, advanced careers in modern manufacturing. The facility, which aims to be net carbon neutral for Scope 1 and 2, will be powered with renewable energy, use recycled water, and operate as a zero-waste facility.
