Location Considerations for a Second U.S. BMW Manufacturing Plant

German automaker BMW’s manufacturing plant in Greer, SC is the nation’s leader in the export sales of completed passenger vehicles. Currently, the engines and transmissions that power those vehicles are made in Germany. However, at last week’s L.A. Auto Show, BMW CEO Harald Krueger floated the idea that establishing a second plant in the U.S. to produce engines and transmissions could make provide a natural currency hedge.
